VENEZUELA, AL BORDE DEL GOLPE DE ESTADO/Venezuela, on the brink of a coup

vLast week, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, launched various signals, both internally and externally: his Government will not yield to what he calls a coup d’etat organized by Latin American neighbours in collusion with the table of Democratic Unity (MUD), the opposition party that currently controls the National Assembly.

This situation has been reached by the fears of the President to be removed through a national referendum which are trying to summon the opposition forces or through an invasion of neighbouring countries led by former Colombian President, Alvaro Uribe, and the United States of America. If to this we add that the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela has given A carte blanche to the indefinite extension of the state of economic emergency, we have a situation in which Maduro has special powers to lead the nation and to be able to dodge a hostile National Assembly to their interests.

In relation to the external threat, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, also has stated in this regard, announcing that they will develop a report which concerned the crisis of the country affecting at all levels, from the institutional corruption to the lack of food passing through the greatest economic crisis of its history.

Internally the MUD, led by Jesus Torrealba, has initiated a process to call a referendum in which they will ask the people if the current President should leave his post, and if so resign and call early elections. However, they have encountered opposition from the ruling party, which is trying to prevent it by all possible means. These measures have been the condition of reviewing each and every one of the signatures required to be able to check its validity, and can thus obtain information of those who have signed the petition. This measure however is not contemplated in the laws, it is an act of control by the Government on the people who want his resignation.

All this causes a situation of crisis that is getting to be the boundary to a State that now lives with 180% inflation and that the IMF expects that it can go up to 700% this year, a country where there is no practically food for the population and where the corruption at the highest level is leaving the State coffers completely empty. The best solution would be to have a cooperation between the Government and the Assembly, but this does not seem that it will occur, either the referendum goes ahead and decides on the Presidency or the crisis ended resulting in a possible revolution with unpredictable consequences.
