CERCO AL DAESH/ DAESH Under Siege

FALLUYA
Fallujah’s Battle

d134eb27386e40fea71525a88bedad57During the last week, the international coalition has announced that a new step in the cooperation with Russia against DAESH will be accomplished: Joint military operations will start soon, and the strategical DAESH bases bombing will be the main subject.

After the Syrian army victories, supported by Russia, in the eastern provinces of Deir Ez-Zor and Homs, and after the Iraqi victories, supported by the coalition (specially U.S.A.), in the western province of Anbar and the northern province of Nineveh; the first multi-front coordinated offensive since the start of the war against DAESH is going on now.

By now, DAESH control crucial areas in Iraq and Syria, with important water resources, and from the core of these areas (marked in the following map) all the military projection of DAESH is done, resulting in ambushes, skirmishes and offensives to take control over more settlements.

The joint offensive implies the opening of three simultaneous and coordinated battlefronts, two in Iraq; one in Mosul, which is being sieged by Peshmergas from the East and the Iraqi army from the South, and the other one in Fallujah-Ramadi, which are being attacked by Bagdad’s troops from the East. In addition to this ground troops movements, the joint of Russian and International (principally American) support from above is being decisive. Meanwhile, the third operation is going on in Syria: Kurdish and Arab militia sieges Raqqa from the north, and the pressure applied by Russia and Assad’s regime from the West is increasing day by day.

At the same time (but not coordinated with the global offensive), two more operations conceived to gain strategical advantages over DAESH are being done: The first one in Ar-Rutbah, in the Western corner of Iraq, with the purpose of free the town which dominate the road between Amman and Bagdad; the second one is the next phase of the last Palmyra’s offensive, continuing the attack of Deir Ez-Zor city, whose taking could mean the control over the Euphrates river and the encircling of Raqqa from the East, completing the siege and endangering the survival chances of DAESH in the region.

The coordination and cooperation agreement between Russia and the coalition, added to the growing Iraqi and Syrian armies’ implication in the campaign against DAESH, makes foresee a trend of significant territory losing in the following months. Being DAESH a very mobile and adaptive enemy, the siege in Syria and Iraq will probably mean that DAESH pressure will increase over Lybia in order to prepare a new battlefield. In the same way, the fail of peace conversations in Syria or the Turkish harassment over the Kurds could mean a relief for DAESH, so it shouldn’t be ignored the possibility of a terrorist violence increasing in Turkey and in Syria, aimed to destabilize and to slow down or to stop the dominant trend.
