ARMENIA, OBSTÁCULO PARA LAS RELACIONES CON TURQUÍA/ Armenia, an obstacle in the UE-Turkey relations

5750113dc36188e23b8b4575Last week, the German parliament has approved the acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman Imperium in 1915 (nowadays Turkey) with the cooperation of the German Imperium, their ally back then. In that genocide, the Ottomans killed (according to the less sensationalists sources) more than 1 million Armenians.

This symbolic act, which comes 100 years late, happens in a very delicate moment because of the tense relations between EU and Turkey, motivated by de agreements about the refugees. Erdogan’s government has shown its rejection to this public declaration, threatening the relationship with Europe and calling the ambassador in Berlin for consultations.

Even though it’s a fact that the genocide happened, the decision of the German parliament plays against the needs of Europe as a whole, especially against the needs of the Eastern countries. The Armenian diaspora in Germany is barely the 0’09% of the total population of the country, and the politics or the decisions that Turkey could take as a result of this declaration (as could be easily the adoption of a harder and more aggressive strategy of negotiation) could endanger the security of Europe and the stability of the main refugees-receptors, which also aren’t the strongest and more stable countries of the Union.

In conclusion, Germany has unnecessarily complicated the relationship between the whole Union and Turkey with a declaration which Turkey consider as a serious diplomatic insult, precisely in a critical moment relating to our security (France Euro 2016) and in the middle of the worst season of refugees traffic (in summer, especially the maritime, increases).

Now Turkey exist, is the gate of Europe, and the very existence of the Union is subordinated to te cooperation level that Turkey is disposed to offer. Look the other way, as Germany do with the refugees, the press freedom or the islamization of the country, could be the right strategy in situations like this, in which there is a lot of things to loose and nothing to win.
