EL AVANCE DE BOKO HARAM/ The advance of Boko Haram

20150124_MAM978The advance of Boko Haram has involved several countries in a conflict which began like a local conflict. Indeed, the terrorist group Boko Haram and its asymmetric warfare against the government of Nigeria has already been a key issue in the development of the «roadmaps» of the countries in the area.

Boko Haram has been made with the city of Bosso, a city of Niger, near the border with Nigeria. This has killed more than thirty people, and this has demonstrated the ability of the terrorist group against the security forces of a state which, despite its reinforcement in security measures, suffers attacks from the north as a result of tensions from the neighbouring Mali; and south, by the pressures of Boko Haram.

Upon this, the President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, has visited his Chadian counterpart. May be recalled that Chad has one of the best trained armies in Africa and also Boko Haram attacks have become the epicentre of security strategies in the region.

Lake Chad is a region shared by Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. It has served as a refuge for members of this terrorist group. The borders in the Sahel are uncontrolled. Most of the states are considered unsuccessful because they are losing control over them in favour of insurgent groups. It kowtows to the biggest organizations that support global jihadism, as Al Qaeda or Islamic State. In this context, Lake Chad border are hindering the protection, because it is a natural space whose sovereignty is shared by several states that have different security measures. But, what other consequences bring the progress of Boko Haram?

The territories acquired by Boko Haram pose a territorial conquest for the Islamic State which are faced against al Qaeda for the global jihadist hegemony. Traditionally, this African area has been territory under Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)’s control. Therefore, it could be a possible confrontation between the two main groups in the area. Lake Chad could become the scene of a conflict between Al Qaeda and Islamic State. It will be featured by its two main subsidiaries, and it would backed by insurgent groups that appear in these territories. For all this, a intra- sahelian cooperation is necessary.
