EL TERRORISMO YIHADISTA Y SU AMENAZA ACTUAL/ Yihadist terrorism and its current threat

Obviously, the jihadist terrorism is a serious problem nowadays, but looking at the statistics on the number of casualties caused by this phenomenon, it is not a priority for the Western world because, for example, in 2000 85 % of the jihadist attacks occurred predominantly in Muslim countries.

Actually, the media are causing and extending the feeling of insecurity according to the echo of certain news; for example, jihadist terrorism monopolizes the news when an attack happens or when a group takes the center of the stage, but no one speaks about the homicides and crime in Latin America or in the United States. Under immediate effect, yes, the jihadist terrorism is a serious problem because the blow is unexpected, near, immediate and with a strong impact, although the threat, as has been said, is superior for the Muslim population and the Muslim-majority countries; however, the phenomenon of the returnees and the possibility of the formation of jihadist cells in the West, along with the echo of the propaganda of these groups, has alerted the Western societies on this issue.

It is a real threat because it hits Muslim territories daily due to the open and sectarian wars in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan … and because it has hit Western countries at certain times and, ultimately, with more frequency (as we saw in Paris, Belgium, USA …). And it is a current threat because the problem has grown in recent years caused by one of the protagonists of this phenomenon: the Daesh after a war in a Muslim territory (Iraq, 2003), the emergence of the Arab Spring and the continuous pursuit of regime changes (from 2010 to now, with the war in Syria) and due to the religious sectarianism in the region (ex. in Iraq during the government of Nouri Al-Maliki); but the reality is that it has evolved taking the example and experience of a previous threat (Al Qaeda, the pioneer of the global Jihad) and it has continuing a war that has been going on since ancient times (from the religious division after the death of Muhammad between the Shiites and Sunnis on the one hand, with the war between Muslims and Crusaders in the Middle Ages by another and, finally, after the colonization and the intervention in the region of Levant -al Sham- by Western countries).

But the jihadist narrative is what is fueling this phenomenon, which is currently pursuing the construction of an Islamic state, the application of Sharia law in the Muslim world and the confrontation to the presence and dominance of the West in Muslim territories (with the acclamation of the recovery of those territories that had been under Muslim rule: Dar al Islam, which includes the Spanish territory –Al Andalus-, for example). Daesh is a master applying the jihadist narrative and playing with the symbology; for example, the name of its official monthly magazine, Dabiq, refers to the prophecy of the last battle between Muslims and infidels, in the town of the same name (Syria, near Kobane). The jihadist narrative, played through their propaganda and communication devices, is seeking the justification of their actions and the legitimacy of its existence echoing the words and actions of Muhammad and manipulating them to sell their cause to an unsatisfied and wound population of various kinds and nationalities.

The way to deal with this self-legitimation and its visual-linguistic attractive is fighting back with a counter-narrative of similar dimensions to make justice and highlight the true face of this phenomenon.
