15 DE JULIO: POR DIOS Y POR LA PATRIA / 15 of July: for God and country

TURKEY-POLITICS-ERDOGAN

erdogan1Since the founding of Turkey as a republic with Kemal Atatürk, promoter of secularism in the country, the military has been the guarantor of the new political and social order. Therefore, the Turkish president Erdogan, defender of Islam, has never had good ties with the military leadership, heir to the orders of Atatürk in defense of the secularism, and he has relied to the police the work of the internal security and has left the first line combat to the army. Already at the beginning of his government, the president began to bring to the networks of his command to his supporters, loyalists to the Islamist party AKP and, after the failed coup of July 15, held through the streets under the shouting of «Allah ‘u Akbar», he has received a white carte to continue his anti-Kemalist purge.

The president of Turkey has shown, throughout his government, little unwilled to be left bend or been detained his aspirations, whatever the challenger was -from Russia, with the downing of the military aircraft crossing its airspace, to the EU, leading to an agreement in which he positioned himself as the winner, receiving a large sum of money and guarantees of accession, and the Union bowed to the need to see reduced the irregular flow of immigrants. He has no truce and no quarter to those who have faced him -the Kurds or the press- and has had no qualms about carrying out harsh strictures against those who declare vexation to his policy.

The coup began by calling for the defense of democracy, freedom and secularism and hours later, the President Erdogan, through his mobile phone and played through a chain of Turkish television in the middle of the events, he called the people to take to the streets to fight for the same thing: freedom and democracy, supported later by magnets from mosques. The population responded to the order of the governing authority and the religious authorities. The power of the Turkish President was accomplished using the defense of its legitimate government and the religious leaders hailed the country’s Islamists: the answer was revolutionary and in recognition of the will of Allah.

The coup lasted just 3 hours and the government’s reaction was shown premeditated. As soon as it was finished, Erdogan quickly took a very detailed list of the people who had to be deteined: 103 generals and admirals of the Armed Forces (1/3 of the dome of the Turkish Armed Forces), 6,000 military, 8,777 people from Ministry of Interior, 20 provincial governors, 1,500 from the Ministry of Finance and 3,000 judges. As it was seen that the revolutionary movement had emerged from the Turkish Incirlik base from which operates the International Coalition in Syria and Iraq -where the US has about 2,500 military-, Turkey added to their suspicions their American allies in NATO, but the prosecution of the coup has been especially directed against the main opponent of Erdogan and his followers: Fetullah Gullen, exiled in the United States and leader of the influential movement Hizmet. Cleaning charges to renew his government personnel has been precipitous and excused in just one day. The problem looms before the activity that has occurred after July 15: executions in the street imitating Daesh’s bloody style, violence and violation of human rights and the proximity of the validation of the death penalty for the final and radical closure of the opposition movement to the Islamist government of Erdogan.

The blow was not going to come to fruition, having only one third of the dome of the armed forces and with just a military faction, having forgotten the complete closure of the communication channels and without the support of the population. Turkey does not want to be involved in more internal crisis, not to say a possible civil war, when it is already suffering the Kurdish conflict, the coup of terrorism, managing a huge illegal immigration and a neighboring war.

Although the military coup arose to protect the safe cleaning charges that was going to happen on Aug. 1 at the National Security Council and as it denounce the corruption, repression, Islamist and dictatorial policies of the President and the double foul play of the government, disguised behind the appearance of democracy and its opaque relationship with the actors in the Syrian and Iraqi war (where have drawn complaints for alleged involvement in favor of Islamist terrorism), it has warned that, despite of all this, the people have decided to hold on to a leader who navigates amid the confusion and chaos. Still, the coup leaders risked everything, despite having everything to lose, knowing the risks and with few chances and being evident that such a move may not have gone unnoticed by the President Erdogan.
