THERESA MAY Y EL FUTURO DE REINO UNIDO/ Theresa May and the future of United Kingdom

MAThe last 24 of June, after knowing the result of the referendum in which it was asked to the British people if they wanted to continue belonging to the EU, the British premier David Cameron announced that he would not be the one who will direct the negotiations for the output, so he announced his resignation of the charge as soon as he had a substitute. The road, which was intended to end in September, barely lasted a month, in which Theresa May, former Minister of Home Affairs, was made with the power, thus becoming the second English woman to occupy number 10 Downing Street after the 11 years in which Margaret Thatcher did.

Her stronger opponent was Andrea Leadsom, but she withdrew at the last moment because May had most of the supports. It was at that moment when, named officially by Queen Isabel II as British Prime Minister, she made official who would be part of his Cabinet during his years in office.

Among the most important figures are the former Mayor of London Boris Johnson as new Minister of Foreign Affairs; Philip Hammond as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and previously Minister of Foreign Affairs; David Davis, who will take care of the newly created Ministry for the Output of the European Union; Amber Rudd, occupying the position of Home Affairs after leaving it May; Michael Fallon as Minister of Defence; Liam Fox, former Minister of Defence happened to direct the Department of International Commerce; and finally Andrea Leadsom happen to lead the Environment Minister.

The new Cabinet has been especially chosen for the occasion: both to be able to guide the more orderly way possible the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of the EU as to calm tempers within the conservative party and return to achieve internal stability.

As for the negotiations on the Brexit, it has been designed so that it doesn´t falls on a single person, because Johnson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Davis as Minister for the Output of the European Union will participate in them. In addition, the role of Fox has been reinforced since he will see the renegotiation of trade agreements with the rest of the world to avoid that in the time of departure of United Kingdom from the EU it will be affected. The British premier has also reiterated on several occasions that “Brexit means Brexit”, so it does not give the feeling that she will raise a new referendum on the issue as many people suggest.

The arrival of Theresa May to power starts a new stage, somewhat complicated for the United Kingdom, because it must negotiate the departure of the European Union as well as meet new requests secessionist from Scotland and Northern Ireland, unhappy with the outcome of the referendum. In addition, it is also important to see how to evolve relationships with US, since Obama mentioned that an United Kingdom outside of the EU wouldn’t have the role of a strategic partner of them, although the arrival of the new President at the end of year will decide how will these relations will develop in the future. Although one thing it’s true, and it seems that the conservative party can return to a certain internal unity lost in recent years under the leadership of Theresa May.
