GOLPE DE ESTADO EN EL PARLAMENTO DE NICARAGUA/ The Nicaraguan Parliament coup

NIOn July 29 the Electoral Court of Nicaragua retired its members act to the 28 members of the Independent Liberal Party (PLI), thus leaving a National Assembly completely controlled by President Daniel Ortega and his party, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN).

This is not the first authoritarian gesture that the President has shown as already past 8 June withdrew the seat of the parliamentary Eduardo Montealegre, legal representative of PLI and leader of the same, leaving a decapitated party. As his successor at the head of the PLI the constitutional room of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) elected a politician virtually unknown in Nicaragua, Pedro Reyes, which demanded the obedience of his companions. They refused on the grounds that he was an ally of Ortega, so he requested the Electoral Court of Nicaragua to withdraw the seat of all the members of the party, which has been completed.

With this gesture President Ortega has managed to do with almost absolute power in the country by controlling the judiciary, public administrations through his wife Rosario Murillo and his sons; the electoral power, thanks to which he banned independent electoral monitoring organizations like the Carter Center, the OAS and the EU; and finally the parliamentary power. Only business associations still resist weakly, even though they have been many years supporting him until this last act, and that they have demonstrated against the dismissal of members of Parliament since it kills political pluralism in the country, the little already remained. Even so, this does not imply for him any stumbling block. The next step to take is the appointment of a Vice President of the country, which is believed to be named for his wife, the Eternally Loyal.

The President aims to establish a hereditary Government passing along his family, beginning with his wife, now that he managed to reform the Constitution so that the presidential mandates could be undefined instead of being limited to two. This is the reason why he is maintaining the absolute control of the State and why he has given unnecessary shocks as the parliamentarians, since before this he had the complete controlled of the Chamber having his party’s 62 MPs from 91, by what in fact controlled the majority of the House. The next step will be the legitimacy of his Government in the elections that will take place in November, where there’s no strong opposition and that would ensure him another 5 years of mandate in which there will be more surprises.
