The president of South Korea, Park Heun-hye, has been embroiled in the biggest politic scandal living in the Asiatic country in recent decades.
According to the Asian country press, Park has been guiding in private on the advice of friend, that she has known for four decades, Choi Soon-sil (nicknamed as a Corean Rasputina) a women who, without holding any office within the Official organization chart, has focused on issues ranging from the most mundane to the election of the president’s wardrobe to other very sensitive such as the writing of speeches on topics as thorny as the eventual reunification with North Korea. That is to say, someone without charge, without the official consent, without knowledge of anyone and without having legitimate access to confidential information, has decisively influenced matters that directly affect the lives of millions of Koreans and thousands of companies.
That, coupled with the leakage of state secrets or clues pointing to a possible misappropriation of funds is some of the ingredients that have shaped the recipe for the dismissal of Park.
After several weeks of deliberation, the last Friday 8 of December, the South Korean National Assembly approved the process of dismissal of the head of State with 234 votes in favour and 56 in against, which it forced her to delegated all the affairs of States in the Provisional First Minister.
After this decision, Park Geun-hye apologized to the entire nation for generating this disappointment and this anguish. “It was my entire fault and I assume all the responsibilities”. Furthermore, she manifested that she was “willing to leave his post to undergo an official investigation” on this political scandal, until then Prime Minister Hwang Kyo Ahn will be in charge.
Park’s deep unpopularity increases the likelihood between the experts that the next president will be a liberal who further the dialogue and the economic engagement with North Korea, re-throwing initiatives nowadays parked as the reopening of an industrial park in functioning in Kaesong’s North Korean city, which Park closed in reprisal against the nuclear test of the North in January of this year.
In parallel to this internal matter, representatives of EEUU, Japan and South Korea met today in Seoul to agree how get some support from Russian and China to resolve the stability threat of the whole zone that it represents the increasing power of North Korea.
China always has been and an ally from North Korea, because this one has constituted, until the now, his most important ally in this part of Asia. But, immediately after the development of the hydrogen bomb that is carrying out North Korea and after the murder of the uncle of Kim Jong – One, Song-thaek, a figure very near to China, the relations with his principal support have been deteriorating up to the point, that China has approached his principal enemy, his neighbour of the South.
However, China always is going to keep his relation with North Korea, not only for his cultural and ideological communist nearness, but for more practical motives. China wants to avoid the collapse of his regimen, which would give place to a massive exodus that would force him to fight with dozens of thousands of refugees who would come to his territory and the consequences that a change would have in the almost hungry North Korean country.
The arrival of Donald Trump to the White House, announcing yet the axis that his going to follow his foreign policy and with the different approaches that he has had with Taiwan, it does not let nowadays to deduce the drafts could take these States as for North Korea and the wished denuclearization of the zone.
But, one thing is clear. Whoever is the new South Korean president, some of the several key policies of Ms. Park are likely to be examined, including an agreement recently signed to share military intelligence with antiballistic Japan and the planned deployment of an American system of Defense that has altered deeply the relations with China.
Therefore, we are before a new uncertainty, which only will be able to be solved depending on the way that the new American president chooses: or the traditional one or the totally new one that generates a new point of instability.
